Known for his signature all-white stage outfits and soulful voice, Frankie Beverly left behind more than music. His songs became part of memories, family gatherings, and emotional moments shared across generations.
As the founder of the soul and funk group Maze, Frankie Beverly created timeless songs including “Before I Let Go,” “Joy and Pain,” and “Happy Feelinâs.” Among them, Before I Let Go, released in 1981, evolved into a cultural anthem and gained renewed global attention after BeyoncĂ© released a cover version in 2019.
Beverly later described BeyoncĂ©âs version as one of the highest points of his life, saying it made him feel bigger than ever.
Born in 1946, Beverly formed his band in 1970 before it became widely known as Maze. Support from legendary artist Marvin Gaye helped shape the groupâs journey toward international recognition. Over time, Maze earned multiple Gold albums and built a loyal global fanbase.
Frankie Beverly passed away in September 2024 at the age of 77, but his music continues to resonate with listeners, proving that true artistic legacies outlive generations.
