Best known as the founder and lead vocalist of Maze, Frankie Beverly built a devoted following over decades. The group released multiple Gold-certified albums and became widely recognized for songs including Before I Let Go, Joy and Pain, We Are One, and Happy Feelinâs.
Music observers argue that Beverlyâs work became deeply connected with celebrations, reunions, and cultural traditions within Black communities in the United States. His live performances were widely admired and helped create one of the most loyal fan bases in R&B.
His classic Before I Let Go reached new audiences after BeyoncĂŠ released a cover version in 2019. Beverly later described the tribute as one of the highest moments of his life.
Despite receiving several honors, including major lifetime achievement recognitions, many fans and critics continue to argue that his influence on modern R&B has not been fully acknowledged by mainstream audiences.
Frankie Beverly passed away on September 10, 2024, at the age of 77. His family did not publicly disclose the cause of death.
