Bad Bunny won the Grammy for album of the year for âDebĂ Tirar MĂĄs Fotos,â the first-ever Spanish-language album to do so, while Kendrick Lamar with SZA took the Grammy for record of the year for the single, âLuther.â
The other two Grammys considered part of the Big Four went to Billie Eilish and Finneas OâConnell for âWildflowers,â while best new artist went to British singer-songwriter Olivia Dean.
As presenter Harry Styles announced Bad Bunnyâs name as the winner of the biggest and final Grammy of the night, the Puerto Rican singer-rapper closed his eyes and then put his hand over them, overcome with emotion at what heâd accomplished.
On reaching the stage, he gave his acceptance speech primarily in Spanish â a few hours earlier, after winning best musica urbana album, heâd spoken almost entirely in English.
âI want to dedicate this award to all the people who had to leave their homeland, their country, to follow their dreams,â he said while receiving the third Grammy out of six nominations that the soon-to-be Super Bowl halftime show performer on Sunday, Feb. 8, received on Sunday, Jan. 1.
Lamar won a total of five Grammys on Sunday, with record of the year for âLuther,â following a win earlier in the broadcast for rap album of the year for âGNX.â
âThis is special for me â Lamar said of âLuther,â and Luther Vandross and Cheryl Lynnâs 1982 cover of âIf This World Were Mine.â âIâve got to take my time. Heâs one of my favorite artists of all time.
âWhen we got that clearance [to use the sample] we damn near all dropped a tear,â he continued. âBecause we know how much they poured into that record. And being able to put our vocals to it provides that we are worthy being just as great.â
The only requirement to use the sample? No cursing, which Lamar grinned as he revealed that, and added it was easy to do so for Luther.
