USC’s Londynn Jones returns to Pauley Pavilion with no hard feelings

LOS ANGELES — UCLA women’s basketball coach Cori Close wrote letters to all of the players who had transferred and tucked them in with the Final Four rings, which were to be mailed out individually.

“I teared up,” Close told reporters after Saturday’s win over USC. “Londynn will always be a part of our journey here, and this building process includes her even though she’s wearing a different jersey right now.”

Londynn Jones played the first three seasons of her college basketball career at UCLA and made a Final Four run with the team before transferring to USC for her current senior year. She’s playing where her feet are, and there’s no animosity.

“I know it’s a story and everyone talks about it,” USC head coach Lindsay Gottlieb said after the game.

“Londynn’s on our team this year. She’s a really important piece for us. I don’t pretend that she didn’t play here. But it wasn’t really part of the prep. It wasn’t really part of the conversation as much as you think that it might be.”

The UCLA staff doesn’t engage in direct contact with Jones for ethical reasons, but Close had a conversation with Gottlieb before the season at the Big Ten coaches meetings about small ways she can show support. She got the OK to like posts on social media, for example.

Before the Bruins’ 80-46 win over the Trojans, Jones and former teammate Kiki Rice stood across from each other at center court to speak with the referees before the game. They shook hands and smiled before returning to their respective teams’ shootarounds.

The UCLA-heavy crowd at Pauley Pavilion booed Jones when she led USC on to the court and when she took her first shot of the game. Same when she went to shoot free throws, as is customary for fans to do when a former player gets to the line.

Jones fired a playful shot of her own when she told reporters in early November that her family doesn’t wear blue anymore.

No longer was she wearing blue and gold Jordans on Saturday night. But she wasn’t wearing the cardinal and gold colorway of JuJu Watkins’ Nike player edition shoes that her USC teammates were wearing, either.

Jones wore purple — the secondary color produced when the primary colors of red and blue and blended. She wasn’t available to media after the game to clarify if the color was significant or not.

Jones is staying true to her progress and her game, which has expanded since she arrived at USC. She started in her second straight game on Saturday and contributed six points while dishing out three assists.

She made an uncharacteristic 1-of-9 shots in that game during a season in which her scoring average has increased. Prior to Saturday night, she was putting up 12.5 points per game while shooting 44.7% from the field and 39.3% from 3-point range.

She’s also revamped her defense, grabbing 1.3 steals a game.

“Every decision we make in the transfer portal is really about fit,” USC head coach Lindsay Gottlieb told reporters in September.

“Is what you can do and what you’re looking for consistent with what we need? It doesn’t mean that anyone’s previous school wasn’t good for them. Everyone’s trying to find what is the next best thing.”

Close said she had honest conversations with Jones while she was making her decision. The process was respectful and full of lasting understanding.

“She made the right decision for her,” Close said. “And so that doesn’t have to take away all the great things that we shared. I only am not rooting for her a couple times a year. Other than that, I’m always in her corner.”
